Environmental Theology

Environmental Theology is a field of study that explores the relationship between faith, the natural world, and human responsibility toward the environment. This course invites students to reflect on how religious teachings—particularly within Islam—shape ethical, spiritual, and practical responses to the ecological crisis facing humanity today. It examines theological concepts such as tawhid (the oneness of God), khalifah (human stewardship), and amanah (divine trust), and how these principles can guide sustainable living and environmental justice.

Throughout the course, students will engage with classical and contemporary theological texts, scientific perspectives, and global environmental movements to understand the moral dimensions of ecological degradation. The class also encourages students to develop a personal and collective awareness of the sacredness of nature as part of God’s creation (ayat kauniyyah), integrating faith-based reflection with ecological action.

By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to articulate a theological framework for environmental ethics, analyze ecological issues through a spiritual lens, and propose solutions that harmonize scientific understanding with religious values to preserve the Earth as a shared trust of humankind.
