Theology of Works is a discipline that explores the spiritual and ethical meaning of human labor within the framework of divine purpose. This course invites students to understand work not merely as an economic activity, but as a form of worship (‘ibadah), service (khidmah), and participation in God’s ongoing creation. It examines how faith traditions, particularly Islam, view human work as an expression of gratitude, moral responsibility, and social justice.
Students will explore key theological concepts such as niyyah (intention), amanah (trust), and ihsan (excellence) as they relate to professional life and daily labor. The course also discusses how the idea of work reflects one’s relationship with God, others, and the natural environment—highlighting that meaningful work contributes not only to personal fulfillment but also to the common good.
Through scriptural study, ethical analysis, and contemporary case discussions, students will be guided to critically reflect on issues such as productivity, exploitation, leisure, and vocation in modern society. By the end of the course, they are expected to develop a theologically grounded understanding of work as a sacred calling that integrates faith, ethics, and human creativity in the service of life and the greater glory of God.
