Transformative Piety

This course, Transformative Piety, explores the dynamic relationship between faith, moral consciousness, and social transformation in Islam. It examines how piety (taqwā) is not merely a personal or ritual expression of devotion, but a transformative force that shapes ethical behavior, community empowerment, and the pursuit of justice in contemporary society.

Students will engage with classical and modern Islamic thought to understand how true piety integrates spiritual depth with social responsibility. The course discusses key concepts such as sincerity (ikhlāṣ), compassion (raḥmah), and renewal (tajdīd), while highlighting examples from the Muhammadiyah and ‘Aisyiyah movements that embody faith in action through education, healthcare, and social reform.

Guided by the vision of Islam berkemajuan (Progressive Islam), this course aims to nurture individuals who live their faith consciously and responsibly — those who transform devotion into compassion, worship into service, and spirituality into a force for human betterment.
